The glory of God was the Jesuits' first and foremost concern, and to this end they quickly decided to build a new church for the college, since the two former churches, those of St-Pierre and Trinité, which had been made available to them at the start of the college in Sion, were in a rather pitiful state following the fire of 1788.

Construction of the church began rapidly (1806), following the efforts of R.P. Joseph Sinro de la Tour, and the work was entrusted to the architect Jean-Joseph Andenmatten from Saas. Lack of funds and the French invasion of Valais (1811-1813) delayed completion by several years. Its bell tower, for example, a slender Byzantine campanile with a graceful silver dome, was completed in 1835.

The organ was built by the bishop of the time, Mgr Joseph-Xavier de Preux between 1807 and 1817.

A restoration of the church was carried out by the German Baroque artist Mr. Walter in 1965.
