Frac Franche-Comté

The Frac Franche-Comté collection currently comprises almost 800 works by 400 artists. Initiated 40 years ago, since 2006 it has been structured around the notions of duration, movement, space, entropy, memory, etc., corollaries of the notion of time, with a predilection for sound, performative, immaterial and resolutely transdisciplinary works.

Since 2013, the Frac has been based at the Cité des Arts, a building designed by Kengo Kuma in the heart of Besançon. Here, it has presented no fewer than 70 exhibitions, featuring the work of 540 artists, echoed by a dense, diversified and multidisciplinary cultural program: meetings with artists, lectures, performances, concerts, dance, .... It also welcomed some forty artists in residence, and continued its support for creation by producing works for public spaces around the Cité des Arts.

In 2023-2024, the Frac is offering an artistic program in dialogue with its collection. At the end of 2023, it will devote a monographic exhibition to Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Aux frontières de l'audible, followed by a dialogue between Esther Ferrer and choreographer La Ribot. This period is also the occasion for other discoveries, including works from the collection and works by artists from Besançon's Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts. All of this is accompanied by a large number of cultural events.

From its home base at the Cité des Arts, the Frac is developing an intense policy of dissemination and awareness-raising outside the walls, in the form of exhibitions at its Satellite or in venues as diverse as crèches, schools and higher education establishments, medical and social structures, museums, media libraries, libraries, national stages, etc. Its collection is also disseminated through loans of works in the regions, in France and internationally.
