After the first edition of the symposium in 2021, EDHEA's Bachelor in Sound is once again inviting artists and researchers to discuss the vast field of sound, in relation to art and other disciplines. Co-produced with the Biennale Son, this one-day event offers the public the opportunity to attend a series of lectures and performances. In the evening, Théâtre Les Halles hosts Johanne's Appetite for Depths, as well as a live performance by Chaos Clay.

Access to the symposium and the Chaos Clay live show is free, with registration.

Appetite for Depths is priced at 30 francs for the public, 20 francs for symposium participants and 15 francs for students.

Registrations open until September 20 on EDHEA.ch

Program

Theme 1 | Sound archives: what artistic strategies can be used to enhance them?

10:30Elisa Rusca | The "Voices of Humanity" research and exhibition project

How can sound be represented? How can sound archives be enhanced, studied and exhibited? The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) preserve vast and diversified audiovisual archives, in which sound tapes occupy a large part while remaining the least studied sources. To explore this heritage, a research and exhibition project has been launched: the result of a synergy between the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva, EDHEA, EPFL, the University of Berne and the University of Geneva.

Elisa Rusca (CH), art historian, Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, was nominated for the Orientation Trip 2023 (Mondriaan Fund and Pro Helvetia) and received the Prix spécial du Jury du Prix AICA France pour la francophonie in 2021. The Voices of Humanitarianism research and exhibition project aims to enhance, study and exhibit the sound archives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

11:00 Lorenzo Benedetti | Archisonic: From Sound Art Museum to Sonicity

The Sound Art Museum and Sonicity illustrate the relationship between sound and space, and the potential of sound to contextualize places and create archives. Situated between major projects such as Radio Arte Mobile and MPDS (Mario Pieroni and Dora Stiefelmeier), the sound projects are always looking for dynamic locations and archiving solutions.

Lorenzo Benedetti (FR), curator and writer, co-director of the CSAV Art-Lab program at the Fondazione Antonio Ratti in Como. In 2004, he founded the SoundArtMuseum in Rome. In 2013, he curated the Dutch Pavilion for the 55th Venice Biennale with a project by Mark Manders.

11:30 François Quintin | Music, a visible heritage

The installation register raises unsuspected and fascinating questions about the conditions of porosity between the arts. The production and entry of musical works into French public collections (CNAP, FRAC or museums) raises new issues in terms of presentation methods, cross-referencing and copyright. The presentation will follow some of the lines of François Quintin's personal career, from his leadership of the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, the first French collection to adopt a thematic approach to music, to his production of plastic works of a musical nature, notably in the Lafayette Anticipations programs, and his regular presence on numerous acquisition committees, including that of the FRAC Franche-Comté, guest institution at the Son Biennial.

François Quintin (FR), Director of the Collection Lambert in Avignon. He works for the Direction générale de la création artistique at the Ministry of Culture, Paris.

12:00 Round Table 1 with morning speakers, moderated by Christophe Fellay

12:30 - 2:00 pm lunch

Theme 2 | Sound and listening across disciplines: what's at stake and what perspectives?

2:00 Anne-Laure Chamboissier| What does music have to do with literature?

At this conference, Anne-Laure Chamboissier discusses the main issues at stake in this forthcoming film, using excerpts from the film. How does this crossroads between literature, poetry and music give rise to a new form of writing? What new forms does this displacement of genres induce?

Anne-Laure Chamboissier (FR), art historian and curator, co-author of Beyond Sound. For the past twenty years, she has been exploring the question of sound and music and their relationship with various disciplines: visual arts, literature, cinema and architecture.

2:30 pm Augustin Maurs | How music is bound with non musical things

Through recent projects, Augustin Maurs explores how our listening is conditioned by non-sound elements: signs, rituals, history(s) and media.

Augustin Maurs (DE), musician and composer, curator of the music program at the salon d'art de Genève. His work has been presented at the Ljubljana and Busan biennales and at the Bergen Assembly art triennial.

3:00 pm Break

3:30 pm Camille Llobet | Cracking, breathing, lines and resonances

Presentation of the Pacheû project, carried out in the high mountains, and other works where attention to noise is a way of understanding a language or an environment.

Camille Llobet (FR), visual artist. Her work explores orality, movement and human perception. In 2023, the Institut d'Art Contemporain de Villeurbanne presented her solo exhibition Fond d'Air. Her Pacheû project takes the form of sound works and an initial documentary essay in which narration is achieved as much through noise and gesture as through voice and image.

4:00 Francesca Ceccherini | Curating as political act

The presentation aims to introduce curatorial practice as a potential political act and tool. By sharing some case studies related to sound languages that have constituted alternative perspectives, spaces for reflection and listening exercises, we address the practice of the curatorial collective Zaira Oram and the journey of the Oto Sound Museum.

Francesca Ceccherini (CH), curator, art historian and writer, co-founder of the Zaira Oram curatorial collective and artistic director of Oto Sound Museum. Zaira Oram's practice involves research in visual, performance and sound art, as well as the creation of networks between different disciplines. Her main areas of research are migration, contemporary narrative and border experiences.
